Asas de Socorro is considered a Federal Public Utility organization, according to Decree 86.871 of 01/25/1982. It has the Certificate and Attestation of Registration of Entity for Philanthropic Purposes from the National Council for Social Assistance (CNAS), in addition to being a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO).

We are pioneers in missionary aviation in Brazil . We operate in isolated regions, collaborating with other missions through air transport and logistical support. We take missionaries and supplies to the farthest corners of the country, which is why our motto is "giving wings to those who give their lives.” We also carry out assistance and community development programs. All so that Christ may be known among all peoples.

MISSIONARY FLIGHTS

Asas de Socorro operates missionary aviation in Brazil, especially in the interior of the Amazon. This involves transporting missionaries — and everything they need for their activities — to hard-to-reach places. This way, they arrive at their destination safely and quickly, ready to live and proclaim the Gospel among isolated peoples.

The importance of these flights can be illustrated by the testimony of Valerie Brown, a missionary with the Amazon Evangelical Mission (MEVA):

“If Asas didn’t exist, we would have to travel about 100 km on a very bad road, spend three or four days by boat to get [to a support point] and then another six hours by boat to [...] where I’m working now. With Asas, I get there in one hour and fifteen minutes [...]”

1955

The history of Asas de Socorro began in 1955, with the arrival of missionaries Harold and Elsie Berk, sent by the Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) from the United States. With the purpose of implementing missionary aviation in Brazil, especially in the North region, the couple dedicated themselves to learning the Portuguese language and settled in Anápolis-GO, where they founded the first aircraft maintenance center.

1956

Other families joined the effort, such as James Lomheim and the couple Paul and Jackie Lewis. They brought new tools, a Ford pickup truck and, above all, a lot of enthusiasm. With this reinforcement, it was possible to carry out the first missionary flight. James flew from Anápolis-GO to Cuiabá-MT, in support of the Mission to the Indians of South America, which worked with the Xavante, Bororós, Nhambiquara and Parecis tribes. Later that year, the Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) acquired a crashed Piper Tri-Pacer PA-22 (registration PT-AOR) for US$500.

Anapolis Base

Located at the municipal airport, this base houses the mission’s administrative headquarters, the Aeronautical Workshop, and the Asas de Socorro Flight School.

From here, almost all of the organization’s activities are coordinated. The hangar is open for visits and can also be used for worship services.

Boa Vista Base

This base is home to most of Asas de Socorro's air operations. It is a strategic location, as it is relatively close to several isolated communities. Operating in Boa Vista allows us to provide direct support to missionaries in the field, transport material resources and provide emergency assistance to communities in isolated areas. In addition, the base serves as an advanced training ground for pilots.

Manaus Base

Located on the shores of Lake Puraquequara, this base is responsible for coordinating several social projects and humanitarian aid actions. Each year, it receives hundreds of volunteers and reaches even more people through its activities. It is also the starting point for most of the missionary trips organized by the mission.

Porto Velho Base

In addition to the conventional aircraft used by Asas de Socorro, this base also has a seaplane — a strategic resource in the Amazon, as it allows for landings on water and quick and safe access to riverside communities. The base is also the departure point for several missionary and assistance flights, which bring hope and care to isolated peoples.
